My Ubuntu 10.04 diary August 19 2010

I’m just trying to track my activities on an OS which is like new to me. Since installing Ubuntu 10.04 a couple of weeks ago I’ve installed KDE(i don’t really like it, its layout is too complex for my liking), tweaked the appearance and installed several programs. Most recently I installed a theme to make Ubuntu 10.04 look like windows 7. I used Win2-7 Pack. You can get it somewhere at gnome-look.org
Currently I’m trying to manually install drivers for my Nvidia 9500GT but I’ve not succeeded yet. I have working drivers for it which i got via an update but I’m experiencing tearing of video so I think getting the latest drivers will address that issue. Installation of the Nvidia drivers requires stopping x server and I was able to do that success fully using the following command:
sudo service gdm stop
To start x server I simply use the following:
sudo service gdm start
